The sound of Blue Grass music, much like its roots in the Southeastern United States, is complex and layered. The instruments in Blue Grass music, usually stringed, take turns in a song’s forefront, alternating between playing the melody and improvising around it. Characteristic instruments include the banjo, the fiddle, the acoustic guitar and the Dobro but the instruments used have changed as Blue Grass has evolved. The vocals in Blue Grass music are complex as well, usually including multiple voices layering harmonies of two or more parts. These rich layers of instruments and vocals present songs that narrate the experience of rural people from their personal lives and loves to their economic and social struggles.
A diverse group of cultures and peoples have influenced and inspired Blue Grass music. Its roots in the American Southeast drew upon the music, instruments and dances of European immigrants, especially the Anglo-Celtic music of the English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh as well German dance music. African Americans influenced the roots and development of Blue Grass contributing the banjo, one of the most iconic symbols of Blue Grass Music. Similarities between Blue Grass and Blues and Jazz music is attributed to early African American influence.
