Bluegrass music has been around for many generations though it was not until some time in the 1950′s that the name was actually given to the music. Mr. Bill Monroe and his band the bluegrass boys seem to be where the name “Bluegrass” was derived. The band was made up of Mr. Bill Monroe, Mr. Earl Scruggs, Mr. Lester Flatt, Mr. Chubby Wise and Mr. Howard Watts. The band was formed in the late 1930′s. They were known for combining country, gospel and blues music together. At first this was just their own “style” of music. Later on other bands started performing the same type of music. Since Mr. Bill Monroe was from the bluegrass state and had his own band called the Bluegrass Boys, the music genre was deemed “Bluegrass Music” The Appalachian area is well known for producing an outrageous amount of bluegrass music. There are bluegrass festivals held in all areas of the Appalachian states.
The main instruments that are significant to bluegrass music are the banjo and fiddle. In the music you will hear guitars and harmonics also, but the fiddle and banjo seem to dominate the music. These two instruments are the core of bluegrass music. The music has come many years and will be around for many more generations to come.
